Why Yoga in the Workplace?

Studies have proven yoga’s many benefits: Lower blood pressure, lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels, improved immune functioning and increased focus.

With all the sitting we do, at desks or in our cars, the 21st Century body needs yoga more than ever.  People report feeling more focused, energized, and productive after practicing yoga.  And, yoga at work can offer just the kind of break employees need to enhance performance and engagement.  Read on if you're interested in learning more...

A recent New York Times article, Why You Hate Work, addressed the problem of high demand/high stress work experiences and employee engagement, satisfaction and productivity.

A survey conducted along with the Harvard Business Review offered valuable insights into important factors contributing to increased satisfaction and productivity.

“Employees are vastly more satisfied and productive, it turns out, when four of their core needs are met: physical, through opportunities to regularly renew and recharge at work; emotional, by feeling valued and appreciated for their contributions; mental, when they have the opportunity to focus in an absorbed way on their most important tasks and define when and where they get their work done, and spiritual, by doing more of what they do best and enjoy most, and by feeling connected to a higher purpose at work.”

A regular opportunity to practice yoga and meditation at the workplace touches on a number of these core needs:

  • Yoga offers physical stretching and strengthening leaving people feeling refreshed, relaxed, and renewed.
  • The staff benefit of a daily or weekly yoga class combined with the convenience of it taking place at the workplace can be offered as a gesture of appreciation and a sign that employees well-being is valued.
  • The regular practice of yoga and meditation can help increase focus and clarity of thought; taking a break from work has been proven to increase productivity after the break.
